Plumbing Fittings: A Simple Checklist Before You Buy

22 October 2026

Wrong sizes and missing washers are the reason most plumbing jobs stall. Use this checklist before you spend a shilling on fittings.

Every fundi has a story about a job that stopped because one small fitting was wrong. Whether you are fixing a leak in Membley or fitting out a new build in Kamakis, this checklist will save you repeat trips to the hardware shop.

1. Know your pipe size

Most Kenyan homes use half inch or three quarter inch pipes. Do not guess. Measure the outside diameter of the pipe or carry the old fitting with you. A fitting that is almost the right size is the wrong size.

2. Check the thread type

Threads differ between brands and pipe types. If you are connecting to an existing fitting, carry it along so the shop can match the thread exactly. Forcing a mismatched thread causes slow leaks that show up weeks later inside a wall.

3. Buy the small things too

  • Thread seal tape (PTFE tape) for every threaded joint
  • Spare washers for taps and flexible hoses
  • An extra angle valve or two, because one always fails at the worst time

These items cost a few shillings but they are the difference between finishing the job today and coming back tomorrow.

4. Choose brass for anything permanent

For fittings that will be hidden in a wall or under a floor, use brass. Plastic fittings are fine for temporary or exposed work, but a failed fitting inside a wall means breaking tiles. Spend once, fit once.

5. Test before you close up

Before the fundi plasters or tiles over any joint, run water at full pressure and check every connection with a dry hand. Paper tissue wrapped around a joint shows even the smallest leak.

Where to start

Our taps and showers section has angle valves, mixers and the fittings that go with them, and the bathroom accessories section covers the finishing touches. If you are unsure about sizes, bring the old part and we will match it.
